The Quilt
About this Piece “I was thinking about metaphors of quilts. A lot about protection. A quilt makes us feel safe and warm. The rows of even stitching showing the passing of time, a meditative rhythm—like quieting and rocking a child. It takes time and patience. I wanted the quilt and the rocking to be one. The sentiment reveals this rhythm also— lullabies don’t have to make literal sense ... but the cadence of the words is lyrical and soothing. The warmth and coziness of a sleeping child—the tender connection—these quiet memories exist in anyone who has ever rocked a child in their arms.” —Susan Lordi

Remembrance
About this Piece “This piece is all about memories — how warm, comforting memories help us to heal when we’re missing someone. If you look closely at the carved icons on her dress, each recalls a memory by appealing to our senses…touch, scent, taste, sound, sight. We keep these personal memories safe within us, connecting us to those we love.” —Susan Lordi

Remember
About this Piece "Her gesture could be a reference to memory of an event; a friend or loved one; or a significant point in a relationship. It can be a ‘miss-you’ piece — a symbol for when someone is absent, or given as a gift when you want someone to remember you. It can be a reminder of someone who is not with you, but still very present. This is a very personal piece in that it could represent an emotional time that is known or shared by just the giver and the receiver.” –Susan Lordi

With affection
About this Piece "Somehow our pets sense—they just know—how we feel. And totally accept us, in whatever emotional or physical state we appear. They teach us about friendship and patience and inner peace. They support us with loyalty, softness, an independent spirit and expressive gaze. It is true that animals have a sixth sense. It is the sense of love, unconditionally." —Susan Lordi

Patience
About this Piece "Patience is about inner reflection, peace and calm. Her coloring is very soft, very quiet. I wanted the viewer to feel the weight of her leaning on her hands. To feel the passage of time—when everything stops—to be in the present. It's a reminder to take a moment to breathe." –Susan Lordi

My New Baby (Sky)
"One of my favorite photos, taken long ago, is of my then-toddler daughter holding her newborn brother in exactly this pose. She is holding onto the baby with her entire body—her gesture communicating possession as well as pride and wonder. As the days and weeks passed, a little bit of big-sister jealousy crept in... Growing up together, they had to work things out... the push and pull, all the spats that siblings go through... gradually learning to love and support one another, until eventually discovering... they are each other's greatest gift." –Susan Lordi

Quietly
About this Piece “I've learned, as a mother, sister, daughter, wife, that the communication of touch can be very healing, not only for the receiver but for the giver. Quietly is meant to be a very calming piece, especially for a mom. A lot of people think this piece is a mother with two boys, but I see it as either. (Actually, my models were two little girls with short hair!)” —Susan Lordi

Around You
About this Piece “I wanted to sculpt a young couple, finding romantic love – the butterflies and uncertainty, the chemistry and electricity – discovered when you’re in each other’s presence. I wanted the piece to be tender and intimate, elegant and quiet… Since the pose is derived from dance, I also wanted it to appear to have movement as you look at different angles. My challenge was to carve completely in the round, so that from every view, you have a different understanding… you see variations. There’s no correct way to position the piece. There are three touch points – their fingers on both hands, and the tops of their heads. I like this bit of connection… the tingly excitement and shared energy that comes from moments together with a new love.” —Susan Lordi

With my Grandmother
About this Piece “I carved this piece directly from my memory of time spent with my own grandmother. Sitting down with her, holding her hand, turning her wedding rings, asking questions about her life and listening to her stories. I’ve always been interested in oral history and the passing down of stories from one generation to the next. I think learning from those who have come before us helps define who we are – it grounds us. Their story is our story.” —Susan Lordi

Quest
About this Piece "Quest was inspired by my son, who is currently immersed in the research and documentation of other cultures. The idea of the figure is to portray that time in someone’s life when he finds something that he is passionately interested in — and begins to pursue it, independently, with no parental prodding. He’s ‘into it’. It’s the love of learning for learning’s sake. Quest represents when a young person (or really, any age person) is motivated by his own interests and goals. Quest could be a birthday gift or graduation gift, or a thank you gift to a teacher/mentor who may have sparked an interest in a young mind.” –Susan Lordi
